In July of 2013, several senior high school students from rural parts of Alaska were invited to attend a college scholarship writing workshop as part of the Upward Bound Program in Fairbanks, Alaska. The workshop, entitled Talk Story, Write Story, was led by Tad Bartimus Wariner and Dean Wariner of Hana, Hawaii, and partially funded by the Association of Alaska School Boards and Connect Alaska. Alaska teachers from Ketchikan, Metlakatla, Chevak and Bethel attended a Talk Story, Write Story workshop last fall that produced four Gates Millennium Scholarship applicants.
